**MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – The CAHDI Party, Somalia’s leading liberal political party, today announced its formal call for an urgent vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. The CAHDI party cites the prime minister’s profound failures in addressing the nation’s escalating crises, including widespread political instability, worsening insecurity, egregious human rights violations, and a burgeoning constitutional crisis.
The CAHDI Party attributes the current dire state of affairs, in part, to what it describes as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s systematic attempts to undermine the constitutional mandate and dismantle the parliamentary system in Favor of a centralized presidential system. These actions, the party asserts, are directly contributing to the erosion of democratic institutions and the rule of law in Somalia.
Abdirahman Abdiqani Ibrahim Bile, Chairman of the CAHDI Party, stated, “Somalia stands at a perilous crossroads. The current leadership has demonstrably failed to uphold its responsibilities to the Somali people. The Prime Minister’s inaction and the government’s misguided priorities have allowed insecurity to fester, human rights to be trampled, and our constitutional framework to be deliberately weakened.”
The CAHDI Party and its chairman have been particularly vocal in their opposition to recent constitutional amendments aimed at extending the presidential term, viewing these as a direct assault on democratic principles and the aspiration for a stable, federal Somalia. Furthermore, the party expresses grave concerns regarding the government’s increasingly ineffective and, at times, counterproductive approach to combating extremist groups, which has only served to embolden these threats.
“Our vision for Somalia is one of true democracy, grounded in the principles of federalism, rule of law, and genuine political inclusiveness. “We believe that the path to a democratic Somalia by 2025 necessitates the immediate implementation of federalism, the robust deradicalization of national institutions, the unwavering upholding of the rule of law, and a comprehensive strategy to eliminate extremist elements from our society.”
In light of the escalating crises and the government’s perceived complicity in the expansion of extremism, the CAHDI Party reiterates its demand for an impartial international fact-finding mission. This mission, the party asserts, is crucial to thoroughly scrutinize the government’s role in the current security landscape and to ensure accountability for any actions or inactions that have contributed to the rise of extremist forces.
The CAHDI Party urges all Members of Parliament to heed the call of the Somali people and act decisively in support of the no-confidence motion, thereby paving the way for a leadership that is truly accountable and committed to the nation’s future.
