This August, the world’s largest celebration of free knowledge takes center stage in Nairobi, Kenya, as Wikimania 2025 marks its 20th anniversary.
Hosted by the Wikimedians of Kenya User Group in collaboration with the East African Regional and Thematic Hub (EARTHub) and the Wikimedia Foundation, the event runs from August 6–9 and promises to be a milestone gathering of global digital innovators, passionate volunteers, and leading voices in technology and education.
Over 1,000 participants from more than 120 countries are expected to converge both physically and virtually for this momentous occasion.
As the flagship annual conference for the Wikimedia movement, which includes Wikipedia and a suite of other open knowledge projects, Wikimania 2025 represents not just a celebration, but a reaffirmation of the values of inclusivity, community-driven knowledge, and digital sustainability.
This year’s theme, “Wikimania@20: Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability.”, reflects the conference’s commitment to celebrating not just the platforms themselves, but the real people behind them, the thousands of volunteer editors, known as Wikimedians, who collaboratively shape the world’s most visited encyclopedic source of knowledge.
Wikimedia Foundation CEO Maryana Iskander emphasized the significance of this year’s location and theme: “Wikimania is a window into our global Wikimedia community. Hosting Wikimania again on the African continent for its special 20-year anniversary is an acknowledgement of this region’s critical role in growing and shaping the Wikimedia projects for the future.”
Wikipedia and its sister projects receive over 22 billion views monthly, with nearly 300,000 volunteers worldwide maintaining and improving content in more than 300 languages.
Wikipedia alone sees almost 260,000 monthly contributors, each working in a decentralized, open format to ensure the platform remains a trusted, neutral, and verifiable source of knowledge.
The choice of Kenya as the host for this milestone edition of Wikimania is significant.
It represents a shift toward acknowledging the increasingly important contributions of African communities to the global knowledge movement.

Notable speakers at this year’s conference include Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales, Dr. Joyce Nakatumba-Nabendeof the Makerere University Artificial Intelligence Lab in Uganda, and Prof. Vukosi Marivate, a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
These experts will lead sessions examining the intersection of artificial intelligence and open knowledge, tackling critical questions about ethics, collaboration, and how communities can harness fast-evolving technologies while staying true to Wikimedia’s foundational values of neutrality, reliability, and accessibility.
